When Beth Am's Rabbi Lawrence Sernovitz shared with fellow congregants that he and his wife Becky had
learned that their young son Samuel has familial dysautonomia (FD), the congregation
came together to support the Sernovitz family and adopted the name "Hope United."
After hearing the stunning news, a couple of Beth Am congregants were
inspired to raise funds for the Dysautonomia Foundation, a nonprofit
public charity that supports medical treatment, research, public
awareness and social services for the benefit of children like Sammy who
are afflicted with FD.
Inspiration lead to an idea, and the idea became an exciting project that provided congregants with
an opportunity to come together as a team and help create awareness about, and raise funds for FD.
In 2009 Beth Am sponsored two teams – Hope United and Hope United Too – to race in the
Philadelphia International Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday, October 3rd, 2009 on the Schuylkill River.
All of the donations raised for this great event support the Dysautonomia Foundation, Inc.
Beth Am members have joined in the fun and excitement of the Dragon Boat Festival. The paddlers move in
unison (with a little practice), combining strength with teamwork in a boat whose elaborate design originates
in ancient China. Dragon boats are the world’s largest flat water racing canoes, propelled by a crew of 20
plus a drummer and a steersperson. It is held on the Philadelphia Schuylkill River Race Course along Kelly Drive in Fairmount Park,
one of the most beautiful and largest parks in our country.
